Getting on the Ballot
Wyoming candidates file an Application for Nomination during a roughly two-week window in mid-to-late May before the August primary. Federal, statewide, and legislative candidates file with the Secretary of State - including fully online, with the fee payable by card through the state's candidate filing site - while county candidates file with the county clerk and municipal candidates with their city or town clerk, generally in person.
Filing fees are modest (on the order of $100 for a legislative seat, scaled for other offices), and Wyoming's municipal offices are nonpartisan with four-year terms. Independent candidates petition onto the general-election ballot on a separate track.
One structural quirk: Wyoming runs a second filing window in August - school district trustees and community college boards file then, for nonpartisan races decided at the November general election. A school-board campaign therefore starts months later than everyone else's, a genuine gift to late deciders.
Where Local Candidates File
The county clerk is the filing office and working elections authority for county offices (commissioner, sheriff, assessor, clerk, and the rest), and the municipal clerk for mayor and council - the county clerk still conducts municipal elections, so the two offices work in tandem. School and community college candidates file in the August window with the county clerk.
Campaign finance stays with the Secretary of State: candidates create an account in the state's online campaign finance system and file a small number of reports on the statutory calendar - Wyoming's reporting burden is among the lightest in the country, but the accounts and deadlines are real.
